FIFA’s independent Ethics Committee has imposed a five-year ban on former Guyana Football Federation General Secretary Ian Alves after finding that he sexually harassed female staff members during his tenure with the federation.

The ruling, which was handed down by FIFA’s Adjudicatory Chamber, also includes a fine of 20,000 Swiss francs, equivalent to approximately US$22,000. The sanction bars Alves from all football-related activities at both the national and international levels for the full duration of the ban.

According to Reuters, the Ethics Committee found that Alves breached several provisions of FIFA’s Code of Ethics, including rules governing the protection of physical and mental integrity, abuse of position, and the general duties required of football administrators.

Alves resigned from his position at the GFF in 2024. FIFA’s investigation was initiated following a formal report submitted by the federation itself.

The GFF confirmed its full cooperation with FIFA throughout the investigative process and reiterated its zero-tolerance position on abuse of power and misconduct within the organisation. The federation stated that it maintains a comprehensive framework of policies demanding the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and accountability from all officials and staff.

The GFF Council noted that maintaining a safe and professional environment remains a central priority as the federation works to strengthen its administrative standards. The body also reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and good governance in the management of football in Guyana.

The case represents a significant moment for football administration in Guyana and underscores FIFA’s continued effort to enforce ethical standards across all member associations worldwide.
