Four individuals, including a 16-year-old, have been arrested in connection with the theft of seven million Guyana dollars from a businesswoman in Durban Backlands, Georgetown, police confirmed.
The incident took place on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at approximately 17:30 hrs, and involved a 35-year-old Chinese national. According to police, the woman had placed a black plastic bag containing the cash on the front passenger seat of her motor bus while she stepped away to supervise the offloading of a nearby container. The vehicle was left unlocked during this time.
Investigators allege that a 16-year-old labourer seized the opportunity to enter the vehicle and remove the bag containing the $7,000,000. CCTV footage recovered from the area reportedly captures the teenager entering the bus and subsequently leaving with a bulky black plastic bag.
Following the discovery of the theft, ranks from Regional Division 4 ‘A’ conducted searches throughout the Durban Backlands community. The operation led to the recovery of $4,390,000 in Guyana currency. The recovered funds were counted in the presence of the suspects and lodged as evidence.
Four persons were taken into custody and transferred to the East La Penitence Police Station. Those arrested are the 16-year-old male labourer identified as the primary suspect, a 46-year-old female vendor, a 40-year-old female kitchen assistant, and a 38-year-old male labourer.
Approximately $2.6 million of the stolen sum remains unaccounted for as investigations continue. No charges have been formally announced at the time of publication. Police have not disclosed what connection, if any, the three adult suspects have to the teenager or to the alleged theft.
